Wedderburn Conservation Management Network
The Wedderburn Conservation Management Network has been operational since September 2003. It broadly aims to improve the conservation management of the Wedderburn-Wychitella area.
The Malleefowl is a Flagship Species for the group.
What is a Conservation Management Network?
- Broadly, a CMN (Conservation Management Network) is a network of remnant vegetation patches, their managers and other interested people.
- These Networks are set up in different parts of SE Australia to provide communication links between managers of remnant vegetation. This linking enables the sharing of management knowledge and coordinate actions/ works/ funding.
- In Wedderburn the CMN aims to encourage partnerships and cooperation between public and private land managers whilst achieving better conservation management in this important area.
Does a CMN include both private and public land?
Yes
land of all tenures can be included in the network. Public land managers
have already agreed to participate. Private landholders, particularly
those who manage remnant vegetation, are also welcome.
Will there be restrictions on private land managers?
No, there will be no rules imposed on land managers. However, there is an expectation that members will have some interest in conservation management and that land managers will be willing to undertake some suitable management action when able.
The CMN is run by a committee including local people. There are 12 committee
members. The Wedderburn CMN has funded a number of on-ground works and
activities including:-
- Erosion control
- revegetation
- weed control
- monitoring of grazing in bushland
- fox control
- line searches for malleefowl mounds and
- planning for future works.
The CMN is currently working with the Wedderburn Secondary College to assist students in developing a greater understanding of their local environment.
