Shire of Loddon
“Loddon
is a proud community leading rural Australia as a great place to live,
work and visit.”
The Loddon Shire is located 175 kms north west of Melbourne and covers an area of approximately 6700 square kilometres making it the seventh largest municipality in area in Victoria.
The Shire forms part of Victoria 's Goldfields Tourist Region and incorporates
the majority of the world-famous “Golden Triangle”. Encompassing
Wedderburn, Inglewood and Dunolly, the
Golden
Triangle Region is reputed to have yielded up to 80% of the Worlds gold
nuggets. The towns within the southern portion of the Shire are steeped
in the history of the gold rush era of 130 years ago and have a strong
culture and heritage linking them to gold field influences of wealth
and prosperity together with hardship and pioneering traditions.
The Loddon Shire has a very strong agricultural base with cereals, wool,
livestock and dairying being the foundation of the economy. Other agribusiness
developments are
expanding
with viticulture, olives, tomatoes, nuts, apples and cherries all increasing
in production in recent years.
The Loddon region boasts some excellent wineries and natural attractions that will meet the needs of any visitor.
The Shire’s total population is approximately 9,100. The municipality is characterised by a number of small towns dispersed throughout the area. The Shire enjoys approximately 300 sunny days per year.
The Council’s mission is to:
- Continue to lead and maximise community growth and development; and
- To build viable small communities with strong links to major regional centres.
“A long term measure of our success will be population growth”
